introduction
This year we are going to be exploring and telling stories – so that locals and visitors can find out more about Golcar, past and present.
Here’s a story as a starter, taken from the rear cover of the 2014 Golcar Lily Day book ‘Golcar Lives’
Golcar – or Gowker – has long been associated with the Lily of the Valley flower. It’s said that these lilies grew in profusion around Golcar, especially around the station. At one time, the Golcar football team had a lily painted on the back of their away-match transport. Some say that during a severe drought, the people of Gowker gave their last drop of water to the lilies to keep them alive. Most prefer to quote the founder of Methodism, John Wesley, who is reputed to have remarked, whilst riding through the area, that the people of Golcar were as ‘fair as the lilies’, compared to others in the Valley. Never forget that all can be Gowker lilies!
