golcar yarn ninjas

Hi there! We are Tracy & Joanne, also known as the Golcar Yarn Ninjas and we have been decorating the Townend post box in Golcar since October 2022.

We have been good friends for around 25 years and we both love to crochet (Tracy knits too) and one evening, possibly over a glass of wine, we spotted a post box with a Remembrance Day soldiers head and thought “Ooh, we could do that!” We quickly made our first topper which was the Autumn pumpkin to “claim” the post box.

Next came the soldier’s head with poppies and we were soon in the habit of replacing it every month.

We posted our photos on Facebook and got a good reaction from the villagers, and they soon became a talking point. We’ve done all sorts of topics from gnomes on holiday, a St Valentines’ day chocolate box, a giant easter egg, Golcar scouts camping, D-Day, the Nativity amongst others.

We were even interviewed on BBC Radio Leeds about our Doctor Who topper. Sadly, that one was vandalised and the Tardis and a Cyberman were taken which was a shame, but we hope that whoever took them enjoyed them.

We particularly enjoy doing the Remembrance tributes, we have made hundreds of poppies!

We spend a good amount of time thinking of what we can do each month and then the process begins of designing and pattern making.

To bring a smile to peoples’ faces is something we love to do so you can expect to see plenty more in the future. We are always happy to take suggestions about what to make and we have a Facebook group – Golcar Yarn Ninjas where people can message us.
